Choose by outcome

A format is a trade-off, not a badge.

JPEG is broadly compatible, PNG can preserve transparent pixels, and WebP can provide practical web delivery. Conversion cannot carry a feature the destination format does not support.

JPEGA common choice for photographs and broad compatibility, without transparency.
PNGUseful when lossless pixel values or a transparent background matter.
WebPA modern browser format for web delivery with lossy and transparency-capable output.
HEIC inputDecoded locally when the browser and included decoder support the source file.

Compatibility note: HEIC files vary, and browser memory limits apply. Unsupported variants or very large sources may fail without leaving your device.

Common questions

Before changing format.

Which format should I use for a website?

WebP is a practical modern default for many photographs and graphics. Keep PNG when transparency or lossless details matter, and JPEG when broad compatibility outside modern browsers is the priority.

Why did a transparent area get a background?

JPEG cannot store transparency. Select PNG or WebP when the transparent background needs to remain, or choose the background colour used for a JPEG.

Does converting improve image quality?

No. Conversion can preserve or discard available information, but it cannot restore detail already missing from the source. Repeated lossy conversions can reduce quality.
