Fit the limit

Compress an image to a useful size.

Set the file-size target that matters, keep the strongest result the browser can produce, and see the actual output before downloading.

What it does

A ceiling, not a quality guess.

Many portals reject an image for being slightly above a fixed limit. FormatTailor searches within the available output settings to approach your target instead of asking you to repeatedly move a quality slider.

Target in KB or MBEnter the limit shown by the destination rather than estimating a percentage.
Visible resultCheck output size, dimensions, and the preview before keeping the file.
Optional dimension capReducing oversized dimensions can make strict targets more realistic.
Local working copyThe supported image is decoded and recompressed by code running in this tab.

Important: A tiny file-size target can require visible quality loss or smaller dimensions. The tool reports the actual result; it cannot guarantee that every image will look good below every limit.

Common questions

Before you compress.

Can the result be exactly 100 KB?

Encoded image sizes change in discrete steps, so the practical result is normally the strongest output at or below the target—not necessarily exactly the same byte count.

Why did the dimensions change?

If a dimension cap is selected, or if the source cannot fit a strict target at an acceptable encoding setting, reducing pixel dimensions may be necessary. Review the result before downloading.

Does FormatTailor keep my image?

No file-processing upload is used for this tool. The source and result remain in the current browser session unless you download the result yourself.
